We reserved through OpenTable about 3 weeks in advance with ease (there were several empty tables on the night).
Food & Presentation
The food was consistently decent, but nothing really made the meal stand out. The caviar dish was the most memorable. The sake granita was not good. We paid a supplemental fee for a risotto dish, but it was not mindblowing.
I loved the tea pot and cup, but otherwise the dinnerware was pretty standard.
Much like the food, the service was mostly decent, but completely unmemorable.

For the last 7 years, Baumé has only been about a 15 minute drive from wherever I’ve been living at the time. I’ve always wanted to try it, but the high menu prices were off-putting to me. As expensive a city as Palo Alto is, Baumé is a bit of an oddity. There actually aren’t any other super pricey restaurants in Palo Alto. Baumé has a nondescript storefront down the quiet end of S. California Avenue, not too far from an array of affordable eateries that cater to Stanford students and healthy Californians. …
Perhaps less famous than the only other three-starred restaurant in Napa, The Restaurant nonetheless is pretty well known.
We reserved through OpenTable about 6 weeks in advance. Someone from the restaurant called up a week ahead to get the names of all the guests, who they were (friends or significant others), if there was a special occasion being celebrated, and the choice of menu.
The Restaurant offers two dining menus — a $225 standard tasting menu and a $500 counter tasting menu. The standard menu is about 10 courses long, with the counter version double that. …
Flight: JL771 (NRT-SYD)
Distance: 4,846 miles
On time departure. Arrival at 6.50am.
Booked for my annual trip back to Sydney. It’s virtually impossible to get a reasonably priced non-stop flight back to Sydney during January, so I often end up flying via Asia.
Japan Airlines normally uses a 2-cabin craft on the NRT-SYD route, but a schedule change saw them swap in a 3-cabin 777–300ER during January, which gave me the opportunity to try out a cabin I hadn’t flown before.
60,000 AA points. Searched for flight availability and booked through aa.com.

There are some things in life I have resigned myself to never experiencing. Except perhaps if one day I am retired and, in a fit of spite, I decide to fritter away my heirs’ inheritance. Among these things are staying in a presidential suite at a five star hotel, going into space, and taking a shower on an aircraft.
The only commercial airline in the world with showers on board is Emirates. Emirates runs a fleet of Airbus 380s which each pack two spacious shower rooms aboard its first class cabin. A one-way, seven hour flight from Dubai to London…
